Weigh-In Day: My Fitness Pal {Week 3}

Today marks 3 weeks that I've been doing My Fitness Pal. This week I lost... 

Weight Lost This Week: 0 lb.

Total Weight Loss: -4.1 lb.

That's right, a BIG FAT goose egg! To be honest, I did a pretty shitty job at following my diet this week. For some reason, after hearing at the weight-loss surgery seminar that I'd no longer be able to eat most of the foods I enjoy post surgery, I had a strong urge to eat all of those damn foods (and did)! Terrible, I know. Thankfully, I've gotten it all out of my system and am now back on track.

I did do much better in the way of exercise. I got my tuchus to the gym 3 times last week (would've been 4 but there was a flat tire situation), which is probably why I didn't see a gain (thank gawd!). I am seriously loving my new gym! For me, exercise at the gym is 100 times better than a workout video. I can listen to my jams and just tune out (sans kids), which is really nice.

As far as the lap-band, I've decided to go for it! I appreciate those of you who've emailed me with your concerns (and I've taken them into consideration), but I feel that this "tool" is going to be super useful in helping me to lose weight. It's going to be a long journey, as there is so much to be done before this surgery can even happen (more on this later), but I'm prepared. I'm really and truly excited for this next chapter in my life!

Friday Favorites {4.27.12}

Between flat tires, preschool, what seems to be an endless amount of doc appointments and getting to the gym, this week has been pretty darn exhausting. Thankfully, it's Friday and I plan to do a whole lot of nothing over the weekend. Well, we may do Six Flags if the weather permits. But other than that? We'll be relaxing to the max. Be jealous.

Now onto my favsies...

1. I love that so many of the bands we like (i.e. Chromeo) are on Yo Gabba Gabba. It makes watching kids TV bearable.

5 Albums That Changed My Life (in High School)

Recently, I was tagged in this post by Natalie over at Fifth of August. Since music is so hugely important to me, I, of course, had to do this! However, since I've already written a very similar post before, I thought I'd change it up a bit. Instead of doing the "Five Albums That Changed My Life", I'll be sharing the "Five Albums That Changed My Life in High School". Mainly, because I think out of all the stages in my life (thus far), this was the period of time where music meant the most to me. While I can't say I still listen to any of these albums on the regular (besides 3eb), as a teenager? They were, quite literally, the soundtrack to my life. Cheesy, I know, but oh, so true.

Okay, here we go...

1. Album: Third Eye Blind // Artist: Third Eye Blind

Oh man, when this album came out, I was obsessed. I remember getting grounded in HS and missing their show. Pretty devastating stuff. Thankfully, I've been able to see 'em a few times since then. And in case you were wondering? Stephan Jenkins is still hot!

2. Album: Life in General // Artist: MxPx

This album began my obsession with pop punk. MxPx was actually the first show I ever went to (unless you count NKOTB and Boys 2 Men, which I totally don't). I probably saw them around 5 times in high school and have no less than 5342 photos to prove this.

3. Album: Blue Skies, Broken Hearts...Next 12 Exits //
    Artist: The Ataris

More than one breakup was gotten over thanks to this album. In HS, my friends and I actually got to hang out with them after one of their shows. They totes got us drunk, lol. Fun times.

4. Album: Hello Rockview // Artist: Less Than Jake

Back in the day, my friend Sam and I would drive around listening to this album on repeat. It was the CD that got me through jr. year. Teenage angsty ska at it's finest. They were a band that was constantly on tour, so I saw them a gajillion times. So fun!

5. Album: Enema of the State // Artist: Blink 182

I'm pretty sure every teen in the late 90's was obsessed w/ Blink. I actually convinced a security guard at one of their concerts to let me into the pit (which I did not have a ticket for), 'cause they were my favorite band and "I'd die" if I didn't see them up close, lol.

And there you have it - five albums that changed my life in high school! To be fair, there are about 20 more CDs that could've just as easily made this list. In fact, I may have to share 'em at a later date!

Weigh-In Day: My Fitness Pal {Week 2}

I've now been doing My Fitness Pal for a total of 2 weeks. This week, I'm happy to report that I lost... 

Weight Lost This Week: -1 lb.

Total Weight Loss: -4.1 lb.

And you know what? I'm actually okay with this. Mainly because I started working out and know muscle weighs more than fat. Believe it or not, I'm actually starting to enjoy exercising. It gives me some "me" time, as well as a chance to clear my head. It's crazy but I didn't even know how much I needed this until now. I seriously feel so much better already!

I went to the gym three times last week (would've been 4, but Nico was home sick from school on Wed), and then did a long walk on Saturday with the fam. For the past week at the gym, I've been doing 30 minutes cardio (treadmill), and then alternating arms/legs. However, now that Lola's getting a little more comfortable with being in childcare, I think I'll take it up a notch and do 45 minutes of cardio this week.

In other news, I still haven't heard back from the doctor about my thyroid (no news is good news, right?), but, while I was there, we did discussed other options for weight loss. One of them being the lap-band procedure, which she actually thinks may be a great option for me. While I don't technically qualify according to my BMI alone (it's supposed to be 40+), if it's 30 or more (mine totally is) and you have other health-related factors working against you (i.e. been overweight for 5+ yrs, been unsuccessful losing weight through diet and exercise, etc.), our insurance will cover it. 

Just to be clear, I know this isn't a cure. The doctor has made sure I understand that if I have the procedure done, I'll need to maintain a healthy diet (it's actually quite a bit more strict than my diet now) and exercise routine afterwards. But, if I do things right, it should help to aid me in the process of losing weight. Since weight is something I've struggled with for pretty much my entire life, I'm thinking I could really benefit from having a surgery like this. Not to mention, it would be completely covered by insurance (one of the few perks of being a military spouse).

Anyhow, nothing is final, but I am going to meet with a Bariatric Surgeon tomorrow to get more info. If at that point, I decide this is the path I'd like to take, they'll give me a list of things I'll need to do to make it happen. It could take up to 3 months to get all of this done, but after that I can schedule the surgery (no wait list or anything!). 

Regardless if I end up getting the lap-band or not, I'll be continuing my diet and exercise routine as usual. And, of course, sharing my weekly weigh-ins here on the blog. The only difference is that now I may have news to share about this possible surgery, too.

Friday Favorites {4.20.12}

I usually try to get my favorites up first thing in the morning, but I've been a little behind this week with starting a new gym and all (go me!). Not that this was where I was this morning or anything. I was actually at Target, my other home away from home. Afterwards, Lola and I hit up a thrift store on the way home (blah). For some reason, the thrifting in my area sucks. If anyone in Northern VA knows of any good places, please let me know. Because I'm sadly disappointed with what I've seen so far.

We don't have anything special planned for the weekend. We did have plans for Nico to go to an interview at a talent agency that contacted us (after I sent in a photo on a whim back in January), but then I found out it was a scam (womp). Oh welsies, Nico didn't seem all that interested anyway. He'd much rather be riding bikes, rollerblading and/or fishing anyhow (homeboy got hooked up for his b-day!).

What's Cookin'? - Sausage & Spinach Rice Bowl

On Monday night for dinner, I made sausage and spinach rice bowls. It was so good that I had to share the recipe here with you guys. I know when you hear "sausage", you assume it's high in fat and calories, but with this recipe that isn't the case. In fact, 1/2 the entire portion is only around 480 calories. Not too bad for dinner, if you ask me. Also, this was super easy to make, so even if you're not a cooking guru, you should be able to whip this up, no problem.

Let's get to it, shall we?

Ingredients:

• 1 cup brown rice, cooked per package directions
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 6 lean Italian turkey sausage links
• 1/8 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
• 5 cloves garlic, chopped
• 6-8 cups fresh baby spinach
• 1/4 cup shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

Directions:

1. Cook rice according to directions.
2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and red pepper; cook until all sides are browned (around 5-7 minutes).
3. Once sausage is fully cooked, crumble with the back of a wooden spoon.
4. Add garlic and cook until browned.
5. Next, add spinach and toss constantly until wilted.
6. Stir in your rice and cook until heated through.
7. Top with cheese and serve.

Nico,

This past Sunday you turned four. I know I say this all the time, but it seems like just yesterday Daddy and I were bringing you home from the hospital. And now you're a preschooler, just months from starting pre-kindergarden. I can't even believe it.

As you've grown over the past year, you've really started to come into your own. You're, hands down, the funniest kid I've ever met (whether it be intentional or not). I am in constant awe of what an amazing big brother you are to Lola. And don't even get me started on how smart you are. Your eagerness to learn and excitement for life is completely contagious and rubs off on any and everyone you come in contact with.

You're truly one of a kind, little man. You keep us laughing, guessing and learning every day. Your daddy and I could not be more proud to be your parents.

I can't wait to see what the next year has in store for us!

Weigh-In Day: My Fitness Pal {Week 1}

As I mentioned here, I started a new diet last week. Well, I've now been on said diet for a total of one week and am happy to report that I lost...

Weight Lost This Week: -3.1 lb.

Total Weight Loss: -3.1 lb.

Yay! So excited about this! So far, this diet has been really great for me. It feels much more strict than Weight Watchers to me (which is a good thing!). Last week, because I was new to the program and didn't know what to expect, I set it up to lose 1 lb. a week (and lost 3!). However, now that I'm getting the hang of it, I've decided to kick things up a notch and set it to lose 1.5 lb. (which I'm hoping will actually be more like a 4-5 lb. loss). Like before, my goal here is to lose a total of 75 lb. With WW, my weight was so up and down that I decided it'd be best to just start fresh with this program.

I know it's only been a week, but I feel like I'm finally headed on the right path. Besides dieting, I also joined a gym (go me!). Today was my first day to go and, not gonna lie, I was pretty nervous about leaving Lola in childcare. She's literally never been away from me, ever, so this was a big first for the both of us. Thankfully, because the girls watching her were so understanding, I was able to finish my treadmill sesh, but homegirl wasn't having it. I think tomorrow, since Nico doesn't have preschool, I'm gonna take him with us in hopes that she'll be more comfortable with big brother by her side. It's definitely going to be a process, but we'll get there.

So that's where I am right now. I can't even tell you how much happier I am with this change. My only regret is that I didn't take the plunge sooner!

Friday Favorites {4.13.12}

This weekend is super special because my little man turns FOUR. I can't even believe it. Where did the time go? We're not having a big birthday party for him this year, just keeping it simple. We're going to Six Flags on Saturday, then on Sunday (his actual birthday), we're going to Chuck E. Cheese. It should be a lot of fun.

Alright, lets's get to my favorites cuz we have to get to school early today!

1. This little garment rack would be a great way to display Lola's vintage dresses. That Rachel's one creative mama!

2. How cool are these neon pots? I may have to make a couple of the for my front porch.

3. I can't even tell you how many times I've passed up embroideries at the thrift because they weren't framed. With the help of this framed artwork DIY, I can do it myself.

4. Though I might break My Fitness Pal trying to input the calories from this recipe, I'm still drooling over it nonetheless. Talk about noms for days.

5. I haven't had a manicure in forever, but these ombre nails are pretty BA.

What's Cookin'? - Low-Cal Spicy Breakfast Burrito

This recipe is so simple that I almost feel silly blogging about it, but since it's what I eat for breakfast almost daily, I figure it's worth sharing. Aside from being the easiest thing you'll ever make (no, really), it's low calorie and nomtastic! A total win in my book.

Here's what you'll need (to do):

Ingredients:

• cooking spray
• whole-wheat tortilla (we get ours from Costco - they're low-cal and low-carb)
• 1/2 cup Egg Beaters
• 1 tbsp light mayo
• Sriracha
• salt to taste

Directions:

1. Spray a small sauté pan with cooking spray and add Egg Beaters.
2. Cook on medium heat for around a minute.
3. While your eggs are cooking, spread mayo and Sriracha on tortilla.
4. Next, you'll want to mix your eggs up so they become scrambled.
5. Once they're finished cooking, salt to taste. Then add to tortilla.
6. Wrap like a burrito and devour!

Our Easter

Being that Dan's in the Navy, we're away from our family for the majority of holidays, which is always a little bit of a bummer. I must admit, though, now that we have kids, it's become increasingly more enjoyable. Like, I really get into the holidays now. Any chance to go all out and surprise my kids with gifts slash candy slash crap they don't need and I'm game.

Since church isn't really our thing, we took this opportunity to get dolled up and go eat breakfast at IHOP (keepin' it classy, y'all). We actually had reservations to eat brunch at the Gaylord National, but decided it wasn't worth the money...or diabetes. Afterwards, we came back home to have a small egg hunt and let the kids play with their new toys. All in all, it was pretty fantastic.

I somehow forgot to take pictures of the majority of the festivities (other than the few I captured on Instagram), but did manage to snap a couple photos near the end of our day. You know, after my kids slipped into a sugar induced coma. They're clearly thrilled to be having their picture taken.

Ch-Ch-Changes

As I mentioned on Friday, I'm starting a new diet program today. After much research, I've decided to go with My Fitness Pal. It's a diet based off calorie counting, and since I've had success with this type of program before, I think it'll be the best fit for me.

If you've been following my weight loss journey (or lack thereof), then you know I've had a love/hate relationship (primarily the latter) with Weight Watchers for quite some time. I can speculate as to why their PointsPlus program didn't give me the results I was looking for, but I won't. The truth of the matter is, it's a great program that works well for a lot of people. I, apparently, just wasn't one of them. With that being said, it's time to move on. Which, if we're being honest, I should have done many months ago. There's no reason to dwell on this now, though.

Along with this new diet, I plan to incorporate exercise into my routine as well. For me, the 30 Day Shred just isn't gonna cut it. I need a good, hard cardio workout. I've always had the best results with this kind of exercise. However, since I have Lola with me all day (and Nico, except for the few hours a week he's in preschool), it's not really possible. In order to make this happen, I'll be joining a gym that has childcare. This is a huge step for me, because in the past, I've felt too guilty to leave Lola with someone else. I know it's going to be hard for her to be away from me (she won't even let anyone besides us hold her), but it needs to be done. Since Dan doesn't get home till around 6pm, and I'd prefer to spend the time he is home together, it's really the only option. Besides, it might be good for her to be away from me for a bit.

Anyway, this is my plan and I wanted to share it here with you guys. Obviously, there's no weight loss to report this week since I'm just starting the program, but I'll be back next Monday with my results. Also, tomorrow is my doctor's appointment to have my thyroid checked, which I'm pretty excited about. I know that sounds weird, but I'm just ready to know if there's a problem or not. More on this in coming days.

Here's to a much-needed change! And, hopefully, the start to some serious weight loss!

Friday Favorites {4.6.12}

Wow, is it already Friday? Between keeping Nico entertained (he's out of school this week for Spring break) and doing my daily photography assignments for the class I'm taking, the week has flown by. Don't cha just love when that happens? And I'm super pumped for the weekend, too! I've picked up almost everything for the kids Easter baskets and can't wait to see their faces on Easter morning! I must say, they're making out pretty good this year. Also, we're really hoping to get reservations for this brunch (not healthy at all), but right now they're fully booked. Such a bummer. Keeping our fingers crossed that somebody cancels last minute.

In other news, I've finally decided to cancel my Weight Watchers membership. It's just not working for me anymore, y'all. I've gained 2 lb. this week, and still have like half my points left in my bank (hence my okayness with doing brunch Sunday, because could it really get much worse?). How does this even make sense? I realize that I can adjust my points to a smaller number if the current allowance isn't working, but isn't this what I pay WW to do? I just think it's time to try something else. So, beginning Monday, I plan to start using My Fitness Pal and see how that goes. Mainly because I've had luck with calorie counting in the past (i.e. old WW), it's free, and I've heard good things. If you have any other suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em, though. 

Okay, enough diet talk. Let's get to my favorites, shall we?

1. I know there's been a lot of speculation surrounding the Kony 2012 campaign and their motives, but I think we can all agree that the LRA needs to be stopped. If you've already seen the first movie, I encourage you to watch Part 2.

3. I've been obsessing over these chalkboard spice jars for months, but now, thanks to this tutorial, I can make my own!

Get Crafty! - Pirate Easter Eggs

Ahoy, matey! This morning we decided to bust out the egg kit I picked up at Target the other day.

Look how cute they turned out!



I'll spare you the lame (and by "lame" I mean awesome!) pirate jokes, but in all seriousness, how cool are these guys?! We boiled the eggs last night, then spent the morning dyeing and decorating 'em. It was so much fun! And strangely therapeutic in a way.

The kit comes with everything you need except for the eggs (duh, as if I really need to say this!). I would, however, recommend having your own craft glue on hand as we had trouble keeping their arms attached. Oh, and if pirates are really your thing, they had a TON of other kits. In fact, I may be picking up some of the others after Easter, once everything goes on clearance.
